Louis Andrei Zabala Litera2 10335625 07/11/05 In A Grove It is a story that provides the ultimate explanation of how two different people who are witnesses to a crime give completely different psychological recollections of the same event. The author reminds us that truth depends on the telling. Someone must step forward and tell that truth. I believe that no matter how many times you read "In A Grove," there's not enough information in the story to figure out the truth about what took place on the day of the samurai's death, but it's still fun to sort out what you think you know for sure, what seems highly probable, what seems highly improbable, and what doesn't fit into any of these three categories. But for me, "In A Grove" isn't about searching for some kind of absolute truth ââ¬â it's about how differently people perceive the same external event. The best example in the story of what I mean by this is perhaps the sword fight between the bandit and the samurai. The bandit perceived it as a heroic duel between a pair of honorable, expert swordsmen while the woodsman saw two scared, clumsy men stumbling around with swords in their hands as each tried desperately to prevail over the other any way he could. When it's all said and done, you won't know who is telling the truth, who is lying and, mos t importantly, why. Yet the parable is more important, today, perhaps, as a lesson in how we construct the narratives upon which justice depends: What facts must we know to decide the truth? That question makes the authorââ¬â¢s inquiry the concern of those who now seek justice in the GMA presidency, as well. And it doesn't matter one bit. The writer isn't interested in truth, lies or anything of the sort. He's interested in reality, and the reality of human truth is that no one will ever really know it.

Purposes of Imagery in Macbeth à à à à The Shakespearean tragic drama Macbeth uses imagery to stisfy various needs in the play. This essay will develop the above premise, including exemplification and literary critical thought. à In The Riverside Shakespeare Frank Kermode enlightens regarding the imagery of darkness in the play: à Macbeth is the last of the four "great tragedies," and perhaps the darkest. Bradley began his study by pointing out that "almost all the scenes which at once recur to the memory take place either at night or in some dark spot." That peculiar compression, pregnancy, energy, even violence, which distinguishes the verse is a further contribution to the play's preoccupation with the fears and tensions of darkness. (1307) à Lily B. Campbell in her volume of criticism, Shakespeare's Tragic Heroes: Slaves of Passion, describes how the imagery contributes to the atmosphere of the play: à Macbeth is, however, not only a study of fear; it is a study in fear. The sounds and images in the play combine to give the atmosphere of terror and fear. The incantation of the witches, the bell that tolls while Duncan dies, the cries of Duncan, the cries of the women as Lady Macbeth dies, the owl, the knocking at the gate, the wild horses that ate each other, the story, the quaking of the earth - all of these are the habitual accompaniments of the willfully fearful in literature. (238-39) à A.C. Bradley in Shakespearean Tragedy comments on the dark imagery of the play: à The vision of the dagger, the murder of Duncan, the murder of Banquo, the sleep-walking of Lady Macbeth, all come in night scenes. The Witches dance in the thick air of a storm or, 'black and midnight hags', receive Macbeth in a cavern. The blackness of night is to the hero a thing of fear, even of horror; and that which he feels becomes the spirit of the play. (307) à L.C. Knights in the essay "Macbeth" explains the supporting role which imagery plays in Macbeth's descent into darkness: à To listen to the witches, it is suggested, is like eating "the insane root, That takes the reason prisoner" (I.iii.84-5); for Macbeth, in the moment of temptation, "function," or intellectual activity, is "smother'd in surmise"; and everywhere the imagery of darkness suggests not only the absence or withdrawal of light but - "light thickens" - the presence of something positively oppressive and impeding.

Gambino Cleaning Products Salesman System Specification Essay
A new system of calculating and reporting on cleaning products salesmen is to be designed and implemented. Cleaning products salesmen commission is based on a set of data which is the monthly sales of cleaning products sold by the salesmen. Objectives The new system must: * Be automated as far as possible, needing no thorough knowledge of spreadsheets, databases or any other software in order to operate it. * Have fitted controls to ensure precision and completeness of data input. * Take into account commission payments from monthly sales. * Print commission reports for each of the salesmen, and a summary report showing total paid to each salesman and overall total. * Include an option to delete commission records previous to a given date so that the file does not increase for an indefinite period. The proposed new system can be shown in a level 0 data flow diagram as follows: A level 1 Data Flow Diagram of the proposed system is as follows: User functions 1. The Commissioning Salesman in the Sales Department will be responsible for entering all details of new cleaning products salesman and new products. 2. An Accounts clerk will have special responsibility for the commission system. 3. The Accounts clerk will enter each month the sales of each product, giving quantity sold and gross sales value (i.e. quantity X cover price). 4. Every 6 months, the Accounts clerk will produce the Commission reports for each cleaning products salesman. This will show the commission that has been earned in the previous 6 months. A payment is then recorded and a cheque issued to each cleaning products salesman to whom commission is due, together with the Commission statement showing sales details, and the statement from the Accounts system the total amount due. Generational Diversity Scenarios in the for-Profit and Nonprofit Sectors
In reading both scenarios the generational differences are very clear. In the first situation with Stan and Alex at the Davis Agency the biggest difference was the technological advances that could be under taken to improve process to deal with the clientââ¬â¢s needs. Now Stan being an old timer is having a very difficult time trying any new ideas that cut him out of the loop. Even though Alex conferred with Connor (who was very satisfied) on his way of doing a project Stan felt as if Alex was being insubordinate so wrote him up. Unfortunately, when dealing with older individuals that are unwilling to change you will come to an impasse and not be able to best address which way is different or haw the way things are done can be combined in an effort to satisfy both sides. Now in the second scenario you have three different individuals handling a community effort. While all three try to include older members and younger members there always seems to be someone who leaves feeling that their issues or suggestions have fallen on deaf ears. Now Rick is the one who just doesnââ¬â¢t really care about either side he is a busy man and wants the meetings to go without many interruptions from anyone. This way of approaching the planning of this event leaves all that is involved to try and push their ideas through and walk away feeling as if nothing has been accomplished. While Molly teds to try and find out what is on everyoneââ¬â¢s mind she tends to alienate the younger generation whereas they feel their input is not needed. Being that the older residents have been there so long they believe they should have the most input with know the most history. Unfortunately, Barbara follows the same type of meeting style as Molly although the meetings never stay on task and nothing seems to be accomplished. In both of these scenarios the older generation feels put off by the younger generation. In addition, it is as if the older individuals feel that they have lived a long life and canââ¬â¢t gain any viable or solid information from the younger generation sustaining that they may actually have something valuable to provide. While looking at the issues both of these scenarios faced one must wonder what things brought forth conflict. Age and length of time within the organization played the biggest part in these conflicts. On both sides the older generation felt that the younger generation was stepping on their toes and disregarding them as unimportant and unknowledgeable. Having been with a company for some 10+ years one tends to get complacent and knows that the way they have been doing things has worked for so long why try something new. In either scenario it would have benefited both organizations to take a look at how processes could be improved by going viral (out on the World Wide Web). Cutting out some of the face to face meetings would allow more time in recruiting clientââ¬â¢s (at the Davis Agency) and cutting down on meetings (within the Bay Street Friends). The technological advances while the older generation is afraid that something will go amiss they have to consider their clients and the people they are serving. The numerous people that one is able to reach with the advances would allow business to multiply as well as the number of donations. When dealing with generational diversity and issues one has to always approach with caution. There are various different impacts when it comes to terminating an employee, due to the laws in place and the EEOC one must be sure that the reasons for terminating any employee do not have to do with Race, Age, Sex, or Religion. A company could get into very serious trouble for firing someone due to their age. I believe in the scenario of Stan and Alex the age difference is a problem in the way of thinking and dealing with clients. When Stan wrote Alex up for insubordination it was not because Alex didnââ¬â¢t perform his job exceedingly and abundantly well it was that he circumvented Stanââ¬â¢s procedure to be included and see the project. Now one could say that Alex over steeped his bounds yet we must remember that Connor (now running the company) felt that this was the best way to meet the clientââ¬â¢s needs and was very impressed. Both of the scenarios made very valid points for the Veterans and Gen-Xerââ¬â¢s yet they failed to find a common ground that both sides can agree on when trying to generate business or donations. Veteranââ¬â¢s can try to learn from the Gen-Xerââ¬â¢s by not discounting what they say and the Gen-Xerââ¬â¢s can try some empathy with veterans. In addition, the Gen-Xerââ¬â¢s shouldnââ¬â¢t be so quick to discount the veteranââ¬â¢s and what they know, there are some valuable lessons to be learned from the older generation. Although, the older generation has some very valuable input they must be willing to change with the times and allow growth whether it be for profit or nonprofit. The only way either sector can be successful is to utilize the input from both sides and come up with a collaborative effort that each side can be satisfied with.

Knowledge Sharing Networks and Strategic Alliances - Essay Example The fruits of this research are going to be reaped by many firms in the future when they decide to form a Strategic Alliance and Networks with another firm. Strategic Alliances can be defined as voluntary agreements between firms for exchanging, sharing, and codevelopment of products. A strategic network may also be formed for the purpose of information sharing and using the knowledge learned from one part of the world by one firm, and then applying this learned knowledge to another part of the world through a different company. In the past research was also done to determine the behavior and performance of firms as a consequence of these alliances and partnerships. However, the major focus of the past research was the proclivity of firms or motivation behind entering into the partnerships and what variables were used by these firms for choosing their strategic partners. One important factor that was unearthed by this paper that gives firms motive to form strategic partnership is the use of information. As the paradigm of knowledge has shifted and firms rely on quick and fast information transfer and usage to increase their profitability, information has a premium attached to it. Many firms form strategic alliance and networks to get hold of this information and use it in their businesses for better profitability and performance of the organization. Hence, strategic networks and alliances have become increasingly important in the sphere of businesses today. (Gulati, Alliances and Networks, 1998) There are various factors that have to be considered before a firm makes a decision about the type of strategy that it is going to implement. Historically, businesses or focal firms can either take hold of other firms through investment, joint ventures or acquisition. However, as the time has elapsed it has become increasingly difficult to predict what kind of strategy, the focal or a firm in need of partnership is going to follow. In a study done on 87 firms and 9276 d eal announcements, it found that a lot of factors play an important role in strategic partnership decisions. These factors range from economics to other important fields in a business context. They include transaction costs, R & D benefits internalization view and the level of technological stage of the targeted firm. It was also worth noting that other conventional theories also hold importance in the decision made by the firms to form Strategic Alliances and Networks. Agency Theory, for example, provides grounds for Strategic Alliances and Networks to materialize. Agency theory states that agents act on the behalf of the principle. The finding in the paper says that one firm agrees to act on the behalf of the other and chooses to forego its own business and resources. it becomes fairly easy to form Strategic Alliances and Network.
